New Blood Test Creates Personalized Depression Treatment
Depression is an extremely dangerous mental condition that is well known to every single one of us. It has devastating effects not only on the patient but also on his or her family and close ones since, most of the times, there is nothing we can do to help the person suffering from it. The ways to fight it efficiently still remains one of the greatest mysteries that medical scientists are facing. However, for the first time in many years of extensive research and studies, there is hope.
A team of researchers working in King's College, located in the city of London, has managed to come up with a simple blood test whose results offer very valuable information to the medical practitioners treating depression in patients. The reason for this is that they (the test results) can actually be used to create a personalized treatment to fight depression.
So far, the best doctors could do is start prescribing one type of pill after another to a patient until they come across one that actually helps the patient. Unfortunately, some do not have that “luxury” since their health worsens in a very short period of time and it can even lead to death. Besides that, some forms of depression have been documented to be particularly resistant to various drug types, so even if the correct product is administered to someone, it may not have any effect at all.
What the test does is search the person's blood for specific indications also known as biomarkers. If the number is higher than a certain limit, it indicates that the patient will not be affected by the most commonly used antidepressants.
This new invention offers more than a few benefits to both the person suffering from the condition and the medical staff. It saves a lot of money since there are fewer drugs "tested" while it also saves a lot of precious time and allows the expert to focus on certain products that have higher chances to succeed in reducing the symptoms of depression.
According to the World Health Organization, by the end of the current decade, depression will be ranked #2 in the list of diseases causing major health problems. The significance of inventions like the one just described is more than crucial since it is our first weapon in the battle against a very dangerous opponent.
