Being Overweight may Lead to many Different Types of Cancer
A recently published study in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that obesity may lead to eight forms of cancer. These cancers include liver and stomach among others. It also leads to cancers in the gall bladder and ovary. Finally, obesity may cause multiple myeloma and even brain meningioma. In this study, the researchers defined an obese individual as a person with a BMI (body mass index) of 30 and above. They also considered an overweight individual to be a person with a BMI of 25 to 29.9.
After defining obesity, the researchers reviewed 1,000 cases. In these cases, they observed that an overweight person was more likely to develop cancer than a person with an average weight. More specifically, an overweight individual was likely to develop the cancers mentioned above.
The study states that excess weight promotes inflammation in the body. This inflammation can drive the growth of cancer in a person. The researchers also note that obesity leads to the overproduction of body hormones such as insulin and estrogen. This overproduction of hormones fuels the growth of cancer cells.
Similar studies carried out in the past
This study is not the first of its kind. In 2002, the same team of researchers carried out a study on possible links between excess weight and the risk of developing cancer. The researchers, led by Dr. Graham Colditz, found that excess weight might lead to breast, colon, and kidney cancer. Being overweight may also cause cancer of the uterus and cancer of the esophagus.
That means excess weight might lead to these five types of cancer in addition to the eight forms that were found in the recent research. That brings the total to about 13 types of cancer. This figure shows that obesity is a big problem in society because it can lead to various medical complications. In addition to these cancers, obesity may cause heart disease and diabetes.
Necessary lifestyle changes
Reducing your chances of developing any of those 13 cancers mentioned above is crucial. Doing so may not be easy, but it is possible. For example, a change in diet is absolutely necessary for overweight people. More specifically, eating foods high in calories such as French fries, candy bars, white bread, and pastries is not advisable. Instead, focus on foods such as leafy greens, salmon, boiled potatoes, and lean beef. Exercising on a daily basis is also critical if a person wants to lose weight.
